9 Ways to Save at TJ Maxx Every Single Time
TJ Maxx is a major draw for fashionistas all over the place. The purses, the shoes, the candles, the athletic clothes, OMG! Whether you are like this, view shopping as an always needed therapy or go to the store just out of necessity, one thing is in common – even at the discount retailer like TJ Maxx you want to save as much as possible and get as many items as you can. Most of time, anyway.
While you might be very happy about the selection of products and even the prices, often times you might still get upset about the final bill at the checkout counter. Just because the stuff is already discounted, it doesn’t mean that you can’t save even more. You just need to know how
This is where we come in with our 9 tips how to save every day and get more for your money:
Use Shopkick app
This app is free and doesn’t require you to buy anything to get so called “kicks”. You will get them just for window shopping at TJ Maxx, entering the store, scanning the bar codes, purchasing something and then taking a picture of the receipt.
Once you accumulate enough kicks, you can cash them in the form of gift cards for various retailers, like Amazon, Target, Starbucks, and Sephora.
Shop clearance
Head straight to that section first and don’t look around on the way. T.J. Maxx always has sizable clearance section and chances are you will find something fabulous there for a very low price.
This strategy works with many items, but is especially good for dress shopping. It’s also important to note that those cute regular priced dresses will make their way down to clearance sooner or later.
Keep in mind that yellow tag in the clearance section means that the item is at the lowest price. Red tag signals that it will still get cheaper.
Ask an employee if an item will go on sale soon
Believe it or not, but employees have this information handy. This is because some items might be due to get marked down, but the employees haven’t gotten to them just yet. This is why it never hurts to ask and help you make a decision about buying now versus waiting a bit.
The best time to find many such markdowns are January and July during the semiannual sales.
Price comparison
You just found leggings of your dream and are ready to run to the register to purchase them? Stop for a second before you do and check the price of those leggings on Google. It’s that simple.
Don’t just trust TJ Maxx’s “compare at” price which can be exaggerated and not based on current availability of the item anywhere else. Google search will give the true information to understand if you are really getting as good a deal as you think.
Discount for imperfections
TJMaxx is very good about offering a discount on items that are less than perfect. Make sure you inspect all items carefully and then bring your issues to the register for 10-20% discount in most cases. Some items might already be discounted for that reason and won’t get any further savings, but it’s always worth asking.
The same rules apply for home décor, furniture and everything else. Make sure you can live with the imperfection and go for that discount. In general about 5% of TJ Maxx inventory is considered damaged or irregular.
Rewards credit card and rewards program
Some people stay away from those and for a good reason. The rewards are not the best in the industry and the credit card has to be paid off at the end of the month. Signing up for the card will give you 10% off your first purchase and $10 gift card for every 1,000 points earned. TJ Maxx gives 5 points for each $1 spent.
If you don’t want to deal with the credit card, you can get on the free “Rewards Access” program and get free shipping and a chance to win $100 each month.
Senior discounts
This is one place where you should tell your age. The discount will depend on the store location, but always ask. Many Florida stores offer 10% on Mondays for all 55+ shoppers.
Discounted gift cards
Check out Raise and Gift Card Granny for discounted gift cards. Seriously, don’t go shopping without them. The savings are not insane, but getting 6% or something like that right of the top is definitely nice.
Monthly sweepstakes and contests
Each month one lucky shopper can win $500. All you have to do is enter the survey number from your receipt to enter. You might just be lucky and enjoy a free shopping spree, so why not try?

Everything About TJX Rewards from TJ Maxx, Sierra and Home Goods
What is TJX Rewards credit card?
The credit card is issued by TJ Maxx stores with Synchrony Bank and can offer some great bonuses for frequent TJ Maxx shoppers. Most other credit cards don’t offer bonus percentage at discount retailers, like TJ Maxx, so this card is great for all bargain shopping at TJ Maxx affiliates and stores.
If you are a frequent patron at any of those stores, this card is superb with its 5% cash back based on point system, but it also has lots of shortcomings for shopping everywhere else. If you are considering this credit card, you have to really think about your spending patterns and financial responsibility before you apply for it. Read on to find some useful information that might help you make up your mind:
Where can this card be used?
It’s a MasterCard, so virtually anywhere, but if not used at TJ Maxx stores, it loses its value. The rewards come slowly in those cases, so you won’t get much to redeem.
What kind of rewards does it offer?
There are quite a few good ones:
• 5 points for every $1 spent in-stores or online at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods, Sierra, and Homesense, which makes 5%
• 1 point for every $1 spend everywhere else
• $10 rewards certificate for every 1,000 points
• A great amount of rewards can be scored with this card if you spend a good amount of your yearly budget at TJ Maxx
• $0 annual fee
What are the cons?
• All other stores and expenditures get only 1 point per $1 spent, so it’s not much use outside of TJ Maxx umbrella stores
• TJX Rewards card can’t compete with traditional cash back credit cards, such as Citi Double Cash back with its 2% on everything
• The best way to go is to have both of those cards and use them appropriately
How good is the sign up incentive?
While it’s great to get 10% off the first time you shop with your new credit card, especially if you are buying something big, this deal won’t make a ton of savings for you. You can get a lot more from some other credit cards – take Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards credit card, which offers $150 cash on $500 purchases made in the first 3 months.
Also keep in mind that if you apply for this card online, your 10% will have to be used online, but you might have to spend money on shipping that can greatly reduce the 10% benefit. If you apply in-store, you will have to shop in-store to be able to use the 10% off bonus.
Does the card bring any extra savings while shopping at TJ Maxx?
Yes, all card holders are invited to exclusive shopping events and sales. They can also receive email alerts about new merchandise arriving to all TJ Maxx umbrella stores and get their pick before everybody else.
How bad is their APR?
It’s bad enough to avoid this credit card if you don’t want to pay the card off at the end of every period. There is no introductory APR period either; they hit you right away with 29.24%, which is one of the highest in the industry. Any balance with this kind of APR will kill all your savings. Most other cards offer $0 first year APR and then 16-24% APR, so think very hard if you are really responsible enough to always pay it off or should you consider something else.
