KiwiCo Koala Crate Dinosaurs Review

KiwiCo Koala Crate Dinosaurs Summer Box

KiwiCo Koala Crate is designed for kids ages 3+. This month it’s all about dinosaurs – and show me a kid who doesn’t like dinosaurs! Each box comes with a few activities, but all of them correspond to one unanimous theme. Since we got dinosaurs, which are some type of heaven already, I am hoping for dump trucks next time!

KiwiCo Koala Crate Dinosaurs

KiwiCo is saving my life every month by bringing a box of activities for my son, who is definitely feeling the effects of corona. We didn’t travel that much this summer, because who wants to sightsee with masks over kids’ faces?

Playdates are also less frequent because some of our friends are choosing to social distance and not see anybody. I have finally signed him up for an international summer camp, which is outside and doesn’t require masks, but we still can use extra activities any time.

KiwiCo does my job for me – I don’t have to think, come up with activities, and go shopping for supplies. All I have to do is be there with my son and occasionally help him, unless his older brother is available. I also enjoy taking pictures of Michael working and looking all absorbed.

KiwiCo Koala Crate Dinosaur Dress Up Costume

This month’s fun started with creating a dinosaur dress up costume. This did require my help, but it was no mess. We had to create a custom made visor with dinosaur teeth and eyes.

I measured elastic and attached it to the visor. Then Michael decorated it with stickers and googly eyes. In just a few minutes he was ready to transform into a dinosaur, complete with included feet covers. It was almost Halloween after that with him running all over the house in the costume.

KiwiCo Fossil Hunt

Another activity was to make dinosaur fossils from included bone stickers and ultra-light air dry clay. Michael had to match stickers to the bones on fossil cards and stick them together, which was easy for him. Then clay had to be kneaded until it became soft and then divided into two parts.

Each clay ball then had to be imprinted with bones on the cards and dried. This simple activity gave me a chance to explain how fossils are made in real life and why do we still find dinosaur bones to this day.

Finally, there was a dinosaur DNA matching game with stickers. It took us no time at all and was an easy fun. The three activities kept us busy for a couple of hours and that’s the ultimate goal for every parent. Lots of learning took place, but Michael didn’t even feel the education part, he was very much absorbed in the fun aspect. This STEAM focus of KiwiCo is the main reason why I love it so much.

In addition to ready-to-do-activities, the crate included ‘Imagine!’ magazine for kids, which has some cool reads, facts, and extra activities that can be created at home. For example, there is a page with animal leg counting activity and another one for spotting the difference among similar fossils.

There are also fun facts about dinosaurs, books’ about dinosaurs recommendations, and a recipe for dinosaur eggs from dirt, sand, flour, salt, and water. This last activity will have to take place outside and when mommy has that special mindset for making a huge mess.

I have a feeling that the costume and dirt egg making will be enjoyed many times over this month, which is amazing. We are looking forward to the next crate already, dump trucks or not!
